What I'm All AboutI am not one to define myself by things I've done or the way I look, but unfortunately a lot of people still know me as the amputee from Survivor. That aside, there is a lot more to me than that- well, at least I think so.
Rather than starting from when I was born and describing all of the life-changing events that brought me to where I am now, I'll start with the present, since that's by far the most relevant to you. I am currently a resident (MD) in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill- a real point of contention for some friends since I graduated from it's arch-rival, Duke, in 2006. In my spare time (there's not a lot of it, but I do find some), I also run a coaching business with my husband, training athletes who are interested in improving their endurance and getting stronger- read more about this at our website, www.completehumanperformance.com. My coaching is based on both experience and recent literature that I have sifted through over the years. My specialty is endurance sports given my own background in them, having raced in over 50 triathlons since 2003, (including 3 Ironmans), 7 marathons (including the Bataan Memorial Death March), and 4 ultramarathons (including 2 100 mile races). I also specialize in working with amputees and other athletes with a physical challenge since I understand the obstacles of racing with a disability. My right leg was amputated below the knee when I was 6 months old so I have spent my entire life training and competing as a disabled athlete regardless of who I am competing against! Teams I've raced with include the United States Disabled Sports Team, Elite Triangle Triathlon Team, Team A Step Ahead, the United States Paratriathlon Team. |
